Newcastle 1 Leeds 1 – Friday 17 September 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle rode their luck at times and some Leeds wasteful finishing saved them…but…just about possibly, Newcastle U United (or is that Allan Saint-Maximin?) deserved their point.

GToon:

“My instant reaction after watching that is one of disgust.

“Once again a gutless display against a team who we should be looking to beat.

“It is NOT acceptable to let the other team have the ball from the kick off until they score.

“Some of the players out there tonight are stealing a living.

“Longstaff was absolutely useless. He is a total and utter disgrace to the shirt.

“Joelinton once again proved he isn’t worth anything other than Monopoly money.

“Lascelles is one of the worst footballers I have ever seen. He is absolutely clueless.

“The rest of them were from rubbish to average apart from ASM.

“He stands out like a beacon in that side.

“Special mention to the ref. If he thinks it’s ok to get in the way of a player and block a goalscoring chance then what hope have we.

“Glad to see Bruce got the abuse he deserves and long may it continue.

“Ashley out, Bruce out and lets have our club back.”

“The result comes as no surprise, 2 teams without a win. 2 points lost for me.

“Steve Bruce is again in focus as he should be but let’s not get distracted from the real problem.

“An owner who doesn’t care.

“This season was always going to be a struggle but I fear it could turn out to be more than that.

“Where is a win coming from?

“The club statement mentioning a respectable finish last year and the desire to carry that on, reminds me very much of Sheffield United.

“No ambition, no caring, no hope.”

Ben Cooper:

“Excellent game to be at.

“Both teams gave it everything, both teams looked knackered by the end and the only disappointment was that there wasn’t a stupid amount of goals.

“Thoroughly enjoyed it though. Great atmosphere, great fun.”

Billy Miller:

“Plan A (our only plan) worked today as ASM produced the goods.

“Excellent goal and a pretty entertaining game all in all.

“Shame Bruce never looked like pushing for a win.

“He was more than happy to settle for a draw despite Leeds replacing important players with young, inexperienced ones in the second half.”

Dave Punton:

“Two ways of looking at that game.

“Green shoots of recovery after an improved second half against a good Leeds team?

“Or still winless and 18th in the table and looking tactically short?

“We’re certainly grateful for the mercurial talent of Saint-Maximin for bagging the leveller.

“The mood music remains negative though.

“An embattled manager before this game and rumours swirling about how things are behind the scenes, with the players alleged to be unhappy with training.

“Tonight we gave Leeds a few fair chances to win this game but we gave as good as we got at times.

“A long hard slog lies ahead.

“The position of Bruce for many is precarious but probably not for the owner.

“He will need to coax some wins though if he wants to keep this team up and save his job.”

Paul Patterson:

“A better performance but the fact remains, this side is bang in trouble with Bruce in charge.

“Oh and I’ll say it again, no strikers on the field all game and Gayle on the bench.”

Nat Seaton:

“From kick off we sat back in a defensive formation, then things improved when we went to a back four (that wasn’t hard).

“Good goal by ASM to draw us level but poor finishing from both teams meant another draw.

“There is nothing to get excited about and it’s not like we have anything on the bench that can come in and change the game….

“The minimum we need is Wilson back and ASM in his usual position but that’s not the answer to all our problems!!”
