Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
‘An FA Cup afternoon to forget, for more than one reason.
Out of this cup and Gordon banned from our Wembley final.
It all unravelled before us and that was after taking the lead with a clinical penalty from our ‘world class’ striker.
Absolutely gutted with how it all played out.
Didn’t see what happened with Gordon at the other end of the pitch but he will be a big miss the next time I see the lads play in the flesh, which just happens to be in a cup final at Wembley.
We move on to a week on Monday and an important game against West Ham, in our pursuit of being back in the Champions League. Let’s hope for better things.’
Dean Wilkins:
‘The players gave it their everything and in the end it just wasn’t quite enough.
I am not normally one to go on about the referee but it was quite ridiculous that time after time we went to counter-attack in the second half, Brighton time after time made cynical tactical fouls, that time after time the ref refused to show a card for. I reckon half a dozen times this happened after the break and gave the visitors a huge helping hand.
I think today also showed for sure just what a small squad Newcastle have compared to the likes of Brighton.
They spent over £200m this season and it shows.
Emerging from the severe PSR restraints of these past three windows can’t come quick enough.
It will finally give Eddie Howe the chance to build further on what he has achieved so far.
Three competitions with such a small squad of players was always a tough ask.
Just have to settle now for Champions League qualification and winning the League Cup…’
David Punton:
‘The fine lines of football in full effect today, but it was pretty calamitous for United, who saw Anthony Gordon sent off as our FA Cup comes to an end.
Seems to be something in the water when we play this lot – it never seems to go our way.
It was all after having taken the lead. Pegged back but we had our chances, two offside moments.
The killer one being at the death when VAR had Schar off by about an inch.
We gave it a go in extra time but with Isak off the field we lacked cutting edge.
It was a day when nothing stuck and Welbeck has a hex over Newcastle. Always scores.
The cup exit leaves more chance to focus on the league, but Gordon missing Wembley is a cruel blow, like 2023 all over again when Pope saw red.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘As a Newcastle supportet, I am very lucky to have the time and money to go to every game.
However, as a fan, I am very fickle and am absolutely gutted to be going out of the cup.
Yes, I know when we win the League Cup it’s only going to mask another average season.
Special thanks to Anthony Gordon for getting himself sent, off thus scuppering any chance of victory today.’
Billy Miller:
‘Full blooded cup tie that would have been a dream spectacle for the neutral.
For us, it is agonising.
Two disallowed goals, a red card to a key player that affects us beyond this match.
The amount of times Brighton stopped our breaks with tactical fouls that went unpunished by yellow cards was ridiculous. Baleba did it when on a yellow and if the ref had been stronger, everything could have panned out differently.
They did it again and again because they knew the ref would do nothing about it.
No idea what Gordon was thinking either. The ball wasn’t even live and he’s gone and got himself suspended for a final that is feeling so much less promising now.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘After 22 minutes today, it felt like everything was falling into place with our season.
Fast forward 2 hours and all of a sudden it feels like our season may amount to nothing.
Obviously the emotion of the loss makes things seem more dramatic but with a potential long term injury to Lewis Hall and now a 3 game ban for Gordon, Mo Salah will be going to bed every night dreaming of the hat-trick he’ll score at Wembley.’
