Tom Edwards' spell with the New York Red Bulls has come to an end after the defender completed a loan move to Barnsley ahead of the English transfer deadline.

Edwards rejoined the Red Bulls on another loan from Stoke City at the start of 2022 after a successful temporary spell last season. The full-back amassed 51 appearances for RBNY in total, notching two assists.

However, earlier in August, the Red Bulls revealed that Edwards would be unavailable for a number of weeks due to 'personal reasons'. Prior to the closing of the English transfer window, Barnsley announced the loan signing of the 23-year-old.

Though no specific reason was given by the Red Bulls for his absence, a source with knowledge of the situation told 90min Edwards returned to the UK to be with his heavily pregnant girlfriend and that this was the motivation behind his move to Barnsley.

“It's an amazing feeling," Edwards told Barnsley's official website upon signing for the League One club. "I have been across the pond for a long time now, so to come back over to England and play for such a big club, I'm delighted.

"I've obviously come down today for the first time, I've really enjoyed my time and I'm just ready to get going."

RBNY had already made steps to cope without Edwards earlier in August, re-signing American right-back Kyle Duncan on loan from Belgian side KV Oostende.

Lewis Morgan remains with RBNY for now

Elsewhere, Lewis Morgan has remained with the New York Red Bulls despite serious interest from English Championship clubs.

As revealed by 90min, RBNY rejected a permanent offer from Huddersfield Town earlier this summer, while Millwall also failed in their attempts to sign the Scottish forward on loan.

90min sources say the Red Bulls were steadfast in their valuation of Morgan and were reluctant to let the former Celtic man leave this close to the MLS Cup Playoffs. Morgan has been a key player for RBNY since joining from Inter Miami at the start of the season, scoring 16 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.
