Vini Souza's Sheffield United future has been the subject of intense speculation so far this summer
Vini Souza is closing in on a move away from Sheffield United this summer.
According to German outlet AZ/WAZ, Wolfsburg are confident that the midfielder is set to be the next addition to their first team squad.
Souza was a crucial part of Chris Wilder’s side last season, with the team narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
The Brazilian featured 35 times in the Championship, with the Blades losing the play-off final to Sunderland after coming third in the regular table.
It has been reported that no agreement has yet been made between Sheffield United and Wolfsburg over a deal for Souza.
However, it’s believed there is confidence within the Bundesliga side that Souza will make the switch from Ruben Selles’ team.
It’s understood that a quick agreement could be reached soon, amid reports that a deal in the region of €13 to 15 (£11.1 to 12.8) million could be reached.
Selles is currently preparing the Sheffield United squad for the new season following his appointment as Wilder’s replacement earlier in the summer.
The Spaniard will be hoping to keep key players like Souza for a promotion push next season.
However, it’s becoming increasingly likely that a departure will come to fruition, as he seeks a step up in level at this stage of his career.
Souza signed for Sheffield United in the summer of 2023 following their promotion to the Premier League.
He’s made 71 league appearances for the Yorkshire outfit in that time, with the club suffering relegation from the top flight before coming third in the Championship last season.
The 26-year-old was a key part of the Blades’ promotion push, with the side putting 90 points up on the board, which saw them miss out on a top two spot by 10 points.
Sheffield United will get their season underway on 8 August with a home clash against their play-off semi-final opponents Bristol City in a 5.30pm kick-off.
Souza was a key part of the side last season, proving himself as a standout performer after an underwhelming first year at Bramall Lane.
The midfielder’s defensive solidity was a massively important asset to the team, and now it will be up to the rest of their midfield options to step up in his impending absence.
Sheffield United will have a returning Ollie Arblaster, as well as Sydie Peck, to choose from next season, and the pair may now form a partnership with Souza set for the exit door.
But the club may still feel the need to reinvest whatever fee they get for Souza into finding an adequate replacement in order to have strength in depth in that area of the team next season.
