Steve Cooper has brought the good times back to Nottingham Forest in his brief tenure so far but he’ll want to achieve much, much more before he leaves the City Ground.

Though it seems a fair way away right now, the Welsh coach will be eyeing a play-off place this term and a positive January window could be pivotal to his hopes of achieving that.

With a month to go until the start of the winter window, we’ve outlined the Forest transfer talking points…

A new striker?

While Lewis Grabban has found form under Steve Cooper, Lyle Taylor has continued to struggle, so it would make sense for them to look to sign a new striker.

Keinan Davis was reportedly a target in the summer but new Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is a big fan of him, so that may be a deal that is out of reach as well.

In the race for John Souttar?

A host of sides are reportedly keen on Hearts defender John Souttar after his impressive start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Forest are said to be among the sides keen on the centre-back, so it will be interesting to see whether they win the race for the Scotland international next month.

Brewster is not the only player that Cooper is said to be keen to reunite with as Swansea City midfielder Jay Fulton has been linked with a move to the City Ground as well (The Sun on Sunday (19/09, p61)).

As per the Swansea Independent, Fulton is not part of Russell Martin’s plans and that suggests he could be on the move in January.

Loan signings recalled?

We’ve spoken about some potential new arrivals so far but perhaps the most important transfers next month could be departures.

Sheffield United’s Max Lowe and Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence have been phenomenal since arriving on loan in the summer window but with new managers now at both those clubs, you feel both could be recalled in January.

Replacements would likely be needed by the Reds if that were to happen.
