A new rule change will increase the number of non-EU players that clubs in Serie A can sign and register starting this summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

One hitch that clubs have long hard to work around in the transfer market in Serie A is the limitation on the number of non-EU players that they can sign.

For Inter, for example, they have had to factor this in with the signing of Mehdi Taremi.

The Iranian international is arriving from Porto on a free transfer.

Taremi had been attempting to complete the process of obtaining Portuguese citizenship prior to the move.

However, the 31-year-old will not become an EU citizen prior to signing his contract with Inter.

Therefore, that means that Taremi takes up a non-EU slot in Inter’s squad.

In the meantime, there are other potential targets for the Nerazzurri who are also non-EU players. One example would be AZ Alkmaar wingback Yukinari Sugawara.

Change To Serie A Rules Regarding Non-EU Players

For several years, the rule has been that teams in Serie A can only register two non-EU signings per season.

Moreover, one of these two would have to replace a non-EU player leaving the club in question.

Therefore, if a club did not have a single non-EU player leaving during a season, then they would actually only be able to register one non-EU signing.

One significant caveat to this is that this only applies to non-EU signings from foreign leagues.

So, in Inter’s case for example, the signing of Alexis Sanchez back from Marseille would be applicable. Because the Chilean was coming back from the French top flight Ligue 1.

On the other hand, Carlos Augusto’s arrival from Serie A rivals Monza was not applicable.

In any event, the restrictions have now changed.

The new rules officially permit the registration of two non-EU signings from abroad, with or without the exit of a non-EU player already in a club’s squad.
