Will Bayern have a new option in their search for a head coach? According to recent media reports, Pep Guardiola could leave Manchester City when his contract expires in the summer of 2025.

Pep Guardiola has been under contract at Manchester City for almost eight years. The British Daily Mirror reports that the successful coach could leave the Sky Blues in the summer of 2025. According to the newspaper, those responsible in Manchester do not believe that the 53-year-old will be able to extend his contract again.

The Citizens are therefore preparing for Guardiola’s departure. Michel Sanchez from FC Girona is rumoured to be the top candidate to succeed Guardiola. Sanchez is one of the coaching shooting stars in the Spanish La Liga. Girona are currently in third place in Spain and are almost certain to qualify for the Champions League. The fact that Girona is part of the City Group, in which Manchester has a stake, is a major factor in favour of the 48-year-old. This would give them a coach „from their own ranks“.

The current developments surrounding Guardiola are also likely to be an issue in Munich. Reports have recently been circulating that FCB could opt for an interim solution until 2025 following the departure of Thomas Tuchel in order to secure an absolute top coach like Jürgen Klopp next year. Guardiola would fall into the same category.

What’s next for Guardiola?

With FC Bayern, for whom he worked as head coach between 2013 and 2016, he won three German championships in a row and won the DFB Cup twice. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with FCB. It is an open secret that Bayern would have liked to extend Guardiola’s contract. However, after three years in Munich, he opted for a change of scenery.

Even though the Catalan still maintains a very friendly relationship with the German record champions, a comeback at FCB is not very likely as things stand today. According to Guardiola himself, he would like a job as a national coach: „I would love to experience a World Cup, a European Championship, a Copa America or whatever. I don’t know when – in five, ten, fifteen years – but I would love to be a coach at a World Cup,“ he has emphasised in the past.
