UEFA have confirmed that Spain captain and new Milan signing Alvaro Morata has been handed a one-match suspension at international level following a controversial chant he sung during La Roja’s EURO 2024 celebrations.

During Spain’s trophy celebrations in Madrid last month, Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri were both seen chanting ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’, which led to a formal complaint from the Gibraltar FA.

Gibraltar is an enclave in the south of Spain that has been recognised as a British overseas territory since the 1700s.

The two Spanish players were seen taking part in the chant in front of tens of thousands of people on July 15, after they returned home from their 2-1 victory over England in the EURO 2024 final in Berlin.

UEFA confirm one-match ban for Morata

UEFA have confirmed that both players have been given a one-match suspension at international level, which means they will both miss out on Spain’s Nations League opener against Serbia on September 5.

The suspension will not have an impact on either players’ eligibility at club level.

Morata is due to meet up with his Milan teammates for the first time on Saturday, August 10.
