As reported by Record, the Mexican FA’s decision over a new national team coach is imminent, with Miguel Herrera and Guillermo Almada being the final two candidates.

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino left his role as El Tri coach after the World Cup in Qatar last month having been the first Mexico coach not to guide the team to the second round of the tournament since Mexico failed to qualify for the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Poland and Argentina edged into the last 16 from Group C instead, despite Mexico’s thrilling victory over Saudi Arabia on the final matchday.

Should he be appointed, this would be Herrera’s second spell as Mexico coach after leading the team between 2013 and 2015 before touring Liga MX as coach of Tijuana, Club América and then Tigres UANL since. Uruguayan coach Almada, meanwhile, would finish the current campaign with Pachuca, who he guided to the Apertura Liga MX time before Christmas before taking up the role.

The new coach’s first games will be against Suriname and Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League. However, as co-hosts, Mexico will not face qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be the new coach’s focus.
