New deal for Rangers stopper but it’s time for fan favourite to shine

It would appear this is Allan McGregor’s last season in football, following the news Jon McLaughlin is to extend his deal, and continued interest in Dundee United’s Benjamin Siegrist.

The number two is set to put pen to paper on a new deal, and with young protégé Robby McCrorie also waiting in the wings, there’s little chance McLaughlin has signed on to be McGregor’s number two for another season.

The plan, seemingly, appears to be the gradual introduction next season of McCrorie, rotating with McLaughlin, whose experience will be valuable, before the younger model becomes a more permanent fixture in seasons to come.

With McLaughlin’s new deal, we’d be surprised he’s signing it if McGregor is remaining beyond this season, albeit with the veteran stopper losing a little bit of puff these days (he’s getting on a bit) there will be more chances for McLaughlin (and McCrorie) even if the number one does stay.

We’d love to see the twin getting a bigger say here on in, because he deserves it.

We’ve seen so little of him, but what we have seen has stood right out that it reminds us of McGregor’s own breakthrough season in 06/07, and that led to one of the finest stoppers in the club’s history.

McCrorie capable of emulating that?

He deserves the chance to try.
