Ben Davies hits out at doubters of Tottenham teammate Gareth Bale

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has slammed the narrative surrounding teammate Gareth Bale, whose ambitions and application have been questioned.

The 31-year-old Welshman returned to Tottenham last summer, on loan from La Liga champions Real Madrid. He struggled for form and fitness initially but has slowly been growing in stature, especially in recent games.

Nevertheless, there have been questions raised over his attitude and ambitions by pundits. Davies, though, has dismissed any such notions, insisting that it is just a narrative being spun around Bale, that there are no such concerns within the camp.

“I think for me I’ll never have any doubts about Gareth Bale. There’s a narrative around him that he’s either brilliant one week or he’s not. He hasn’t played a lot of football in the past two years. He was probably our best player against West Ham.”

As Davies alludes to, Bale was top-notch in the defeat against West Ham. Having not started the match, the Welshman came on as a half-time substitute and livened things up on the pitch. The 31-year-old set Lucas Moura’s goal up to get Tottenham back in the game.

Then the Welshman struck the woodwork with a brilliant effort as he almost salvaged a point for the club. This performance came on the back of another fine display in the UEFA Europa League game against Wolfsberger last week.

After a slow start, things are finally starting to look up for Bale. Despite his struggles, he has the quality to make a difference for the team in the second half of the season. And hopefully, he does just that, by building on his last two displays.
