Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that there’s never a good time to play Manchester United despite their patchy form.

The Villans travel to the Leigh Sports Village to face The Red Devils this afternoon. Manchester United go into the clash having lost three of their last four matches in all competitions.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Aston Villa head coach Ward said that it’s never a good time to face Manchester United and that her side need to focus on their own performance.

“It’s never a good time to play a team that are up and down because you never know what to expect,” Ward said. “What we do know is Manchester United are a top side with top quality players in their ranks and they can win football matches, they can hurt anyone on their day.

“I don’t think there’s ever a good time to play them. If we focus on ourselves, we are in good form, we are finding our feet again. It’s an important time for us to play anybody rather than us focusing on the opposition.”

Aston Villa could close the gap on themselves and the top six with a win while Manchester United are facing a frantic battle to claw back ground in the race for European qualification. Ward is looking forward to an exciting game between two quality sides in Leigh.

She said “It’s a really big game. As I said, we are going into it in good form, we’ve won four out of our last six WSL games, that’s good form. I think we need to take note of that, we’ve been excellent in some of those games, we were excellent in the defeat at [Manchester] City as well.

“We know Leigh Sports Village is a tricky place and that the United fans are unbelievable. It’s going to be tough but we’ve got a lot of quality in our side and so have they. I’d imagine it’ll be a good game of football, we ran them close early on [in the season]. It’s another opportunity to test ourselves against one of the best in the country.”

Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United kicks-off at 12pm this afternoon.
