The Netherlands and Hungary will clash in the UEFA Nation League this month. The Dutch have not won a game since beating Bosnia on matchday one and are currently stuck in second position, level on points with Hungary.
Ronald Koenan’s side have five points from four games (W1 D3), ahead of the Hungarians on goal difference.
The Oranje got their Nations League campaign underway by putting five past a poor Bosnia but have been unable to build on that result. A 2-2 draw with Germany followed, before a disappointing October break as the Dutch drew in Hungary and lost to the Germans in Munich.
Germany look to have booked their spot in the quarter-final stage, but the Dutch have work to do. The Netherlands have been impressive in this competition over the years – beaten semi-finalists in the 2022/23 edition and runners-up to Portugal in the inaugural 2018/19 Nations League. This time around, the Dutch are aiming to end a run of 36 years without a major tournament success.
Hungary had a successful Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Marco Rossi’s team booked their place in the tournament by topping their group and collecting 18 points from eight matches. At the Euros, however, Hungary bowed out in the group stage.
The Hungarians, formerly occupants of League C during the maiden edition of the Nations League, are now in their second consecutive campaign of top-flight football after managing to retain their League A status in the 2022/23 edition.
Hungary lost 5-0 against Germany in their Nations League opener, before draws with Bosnia and the Netherlands. They eventually grabbed their first win last month in Bosnia.
The Netherlands are unbeaten in their past 10 meetings with Hungary. A win for either side could seal second spot. The Netherlands and Hungary have met 18 times, with the Dutch claiming 10 wins to Hungary’s five. Three times the two nations have drawn.
The match at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam will kick off at 19:45 GMT on Saturday, November 16th, 2024.
The 55,885-capacity stadium will host this clash between the two teams vying for second spot in the group.
Getting Netherlands vs Hungary tickets could be challenging given the importance of the clash. Ticket reselling sites offer an alternative route should tickets be sold out on official channels.
Ronald Koeman faces a wait to discover the extend of Micky van de Ven’s hamstring injury, after the Spurs defender was forced off during the Carabao Cup win over Manchester City. Calls will also be made on Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee after underwhelming starts to the season at Manchester United. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, who shared the Golden Boot at Euro 2024, has been in excellent form at club level.
Netherlands Predicted XI: Bart Verbruggen; Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij, Virgil van Dijk, Jurrien Timber; Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders, Quinten Timber; Xavi Simons, Cody Gakpo, Brian Brobbey.
RB Leipzig stopper Peter Gulacsi could make a return to goal after missing the win over Bosnia during the last international break. Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai is the talisman and captain for the Magyarok, having netted 11 goals in his 39 caps thus far, and he will lead the attack alongside Roland Sallai and Barnabas Varga.
Hungary Predicted XI: Denes Dibusz; Endre Botka, Willi Orban, Attila Fiola; Bendeguz Bolla, Tamas Nikitscher, Andras Schafer, Zsolt Nagy; Roland Sallai, Barnabas Varga, Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Netherlands have a good record against Hungary and home advantage ahead of this crunch clash.
However, Hungary know the work they need to do if they want to reach the next stage of the Nations League. That said, the Dutch boas the better quality and should have enough in Amsterdam.
Netherlands 2-1 Hungary
