When an in-form Ryan Gravenberch played a perfect ball through to Tijjani Reijnders less than two minutes into the Netherlands’ Nations League clash with Germany, the latter man could do nothing else but put the Oranje ahead.
That goal was registered at one minute and 39 seconds into the match, and was Netherlands’ fastest goal since Davy Klaasen scored after 55 seconds against Türkiye in 2021.
Yet that was not the most interesting record set by Reijnders’ lightning-fast strike, as it was Germany’s earliest goal conceded for 50 years.
And in fact, that goal came for the Netherlands against Germany at the 1974 World Cup.
Germany have now recovered from that terrible start, but at the time it was certainly an unwelcome case of déjà vu.
