Denzel Dumfries and Davide Frattesi are both pushing to start for Inter Milan in Friday’s Serie A clash with Atalanta.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
At the end of this week, Inter play their third match of the season in Serie A.
Between the first two matches of the campaign, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made a couple of changes.
Defender Yann Bisseck and striker Lautaro Martinez started Inter’s opener against Genoa. They dropped out in favour of Benjamin Pavard and Mehdi Taremi respectively for the second match against Lecce.
In the case of Martinez, the change was an enforced on. The Inter captain missed Saturday’s match against Lecce through injury.
And according to the Corriere, Martinez is unlikely to start against Atalanta. At most, he will be fit enough to start on the bench.
Therefore, Taremi should keep his place starting alongside Marcus Thuram. And the same will be true of Pavard in the back three.
But that does not mean that there will not be a couple other changes to the starting eleven.
The Corriere report that there are two other changes that Inzaghi is considering for the match against Atalanta.
Firstly, on the flank, Denzel Dumfries could get his first start of the match.
The Dutchman has come off the bench in both of Inter’s matches so far this campaign.
It has instead been veteran former Manchester United and Parma defender Matteo Darmian who’s started each of the Nerazzurri’s two matches so far.
Darmian put in an outstanding performance against Lecce. He scored Inter’s opener and defended astutely prior to being replaced by Dumfries.
But all the same, the Corriere report, Dumfries is nipping at the Italian international’s heels.
The 28-year-old could get his first start this Friday against Atalanta.
Meanwhile, in midfield, Frattesi has been in a similar boat to Dumfries.
He has been behind another of Inter’s veteran core, in the form of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
But Frattesi has come on as a substitute in both matches, for Mkhitaryan and then for Nicolo Barella.
The 24-year-old has had an impact when he has played against both Genoa and Lecce.
And according to the Corriere, Frattesi is hungry to get into Inter’s starting eleven on Friday.
