It was horror start for the Netherlands as Virgil Van Dijk conceded a penalty inside three minutes when the ball brushed off of his arm inside the box.

The moment of misfortune lead to a spot-kick for Ireland, which was calmly fired home by Adam Idah.

The Dutch responded with a penalty of their however. After Denzel Dumfries was taken down in the box by Gavin Bazunu, Cody Gakpo stepped up and levelled the scoreline with aplomb.

The momentum swing carried into the second half, as Wout Weghorst came off of the bench to head home and claim the lead for the visitors, quieting the raucous home crowd.

Ireland did their best to come roaring back and reclaim parity, but the experienced Dutch defence was too tough a nut to crack, as the visitors snatched all three points and take back second place in Group B.

Kazakhstan vs Northern Ireland

Scorers: Samorodov 27′

Northern Ireland’s fading hopes of EURO 2024 qualification are near-finished after a 1-0 defeat away to Kazakhstan.

The visitors started relatively well with their calm and controlled performance a world away from their chaotic 4-2 loss in Slovenia on Thursday night.

However, for all of their possession in the opening quarter, their lack of cutting edge was evident with Kazakhstan rarely finding themselves in trouble.

The hosts would show their guests how to do it in the 27th minute, scoring with their first shot on target. Maksim Samarodov ran past Daniel Ballard before taking a touch and finishing with a low 20-yard drive. The striker would be booked minutes later for diving in an attempt to win a penalty.

After the break, Michael O’Neill’s men were much the better side but could still not find that equaliser, with Shea Charles coming the closest.

Despite having far fewer shots on and off target, Kazakhstan almost doubled their lead in the 82nd minute with Askhat Tagybergen going close from 30 yards out.

The hosts ran out the clock to hold out for a precious win which puts them right in the mix for a first-ever tournament. Northern Ireland, on the other hand, will almost certainly finish second last in the group after a fifth loss in six games.
