Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman sees Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries as one of the leaders of the Dutch national team.

During a pre-match conference in the build-up to the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League match against Bosnia & Herzegovina, via FCInternews, Koeman discussed Dumfries’ value to the squad.

Though he hasn’t been a regular starter for Simone Inzaghi at Inter, the former PSV Eindhoven defender occupies a special place in the national team.

He was indispensable for Koeman’s side at EURO 2024, nailing down a starting berth as his own.

Dumfries’ on-field understanding with Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo has been the backbone of the Dutch success under Koeman.

While Inzaghi continues to alternate the 28-year-old with Matteo Darmian, the Oranje boss has a different view of Dumfries.

Koeman is adamant the right-back carries the same value as other prominent stars, such as Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake.

Ronald Koeman Names Inter Milan Star Denzel Dumfries as One of Netherlands Leaders

“In our team, you always need experience,” Koeman said. “For me, the leaders are Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Denzel Dumfries, and Wout Weghorst.

“Then we also have 25-26 year old players.”

Koeman’s flattering statement highlights Dumfries’ importance for his country.

Meanwhile, Inter fans hope he will reach the same levels for the club.

Dumfries blew hot and cold last season, forcing Inzaghi’s constant rotations on the right flank.

The Dutchman shared his playing time with Darmian. Despite his attacking limitations, the Italian defender was superb at the back.

If Denzel Dumfries can work on his defensive composure, there’s no doubt he’d become an undisputed starter at Giuseppe Meazza.

Not being a permanent first-team fixture in 2023/24 made the offensive-minded right-back question his future in Serie A.

Indeed, he refused to pen a new contract at Inter during the summer, hoping he would draw interest from the Premier League.
