Legendary former Inter midfielder Esteban Cambiasso believes that Inter’s performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League showed personality despite their defeat.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the treble-winning Argentine gave a positive review of the possession-based style of play which the Nerazzurri tried to impose on the Merengues at the Bernabeu.

Inter had to settle for second in the group after failing to beat Real, but they came into the match looking like they understood well that a draw didn’t do them any good.

Simone Inzaghi’s team saw the majority of the ball in the opening stages of the game and they played a proactive, high tempo style as they searched for an early goal to rattle the Merengues and take the three points.

In the end it was Real who were more clinical to take the lead, and especially once Nicolo Barella was sent off for a rash reaction to a challenge getting any result against a team of Real’s quality always looked like an uphill battle.

However, Cambiasso still feels that there was plenty to admire about how Inter approached the game, stating that “Inter were playing very well in the first half, with personality – in Milan you must show personality and they had this.”

“The quality of Real’s three midfielders made the difference,” he added. “In the first fifteen minutes Inter pressed high and Real are not used to playing with a deep defensive line, giving up possession.”

The former midfielder also gave his thoughts on coach Simone Inzaghi’s substitutions, stating that “With so many matches close together the coach was thinking about the next matches already.”

“Correa is out, Dzeko plays very often and risks getting tired,” he continued. “Inzaghi understood that there was not much left to play for in the game.”
