Nelson Weiper (20) was left out of Mainz’ 1-0 DFB Pokal win against Dynamo Dresden on Monday evening. The German forward is one of the hottest talents in football and with one-year remaining on his current deal, has attracted interest from Europe’s top clubs. Weiper’s absence certainly raised questions among M05’s fanbase, and they were provided with answers post-match.
Bo Henriksen explained to Sky Germany after Mainz’ win that Weiper’s absence was a “club decision” and that “the focus has to be on the team.” Speaking at the end of July, the 20-year-old stated that before agreeing to an extension beyond 2026, that he “wants to see how much playing time” he receives.
When questioned about Weiper’s current contractual situation, M05 sporting director had some advice for the German talent. “The boy should clear his head, then he’ll make a decision. And that’s why we made the decision today that he won’t be here.”
When asked at half-time by Kicker, Weiper’s agent, Alexander Schütt, offered his take: “Nelson Weiper is in top shape, has another year left on his contract and is eager to play for his club. It’s nonsense that he’s not in the game.”
