Iconic EFL manager Neil Warnock had his say on whether Derby County can get promoted.

Derby County are looking to further settle down in the Championship after securing safety under John Eustace last term.

The Rams have recruited well thus far, bringing in the likes of Carlton Morris, Danny Batth and Andi Weimann in a bid to add more experience to the group.

Derby finished 19th in the standings last season, and are perfectly on track to find themselves further towards the mid-table region due to their smart additions this summer.

While anything and everything can happen, and usually does happen in the Championship, a promotion-challenging campaign might just be a bit too much to ask of the club this season, and iconic EFL manager Neil Warnock delivered a blunt one-word verdict when asked about the Rams this season.

Neil Warnock gives one-word Derby County promotion verdict

Speaking to TalkSport on Tuesday, Warnock said: "I think it's going to be wide open this year," when discussing the upcoming Championship term.

However, when asked whether the Rams can achieve promotion in 2025/26, the 76-year-old bluntly replied: "No."

Warnock had previously discussed two of the newly promoted sides, saying that both Birmingham and Wrexham have "got to have a good chance of being up there," while echoing similar thoughts regarding two of his old clubs, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough, who are "always there or thereabouts."

Warnock achieved eight promotions across a fantastic managerial career, with unique stories at Scarborough, twice with Notts County, Huddersfield, Plymouth, Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff, with Warnock describing the latter as the "best job I've ever done in football."

Experience will prove vital for Derby County

After securing safety last term, Derby can finally begin to look upwards after a tumultuous period in the second tier before their relegation to League One in 2021.

John Eustace did a fantastic job of steadying the ship towards the back end of the 2024/25 campaign, and there is excitement about the 45-year-old as the upcoming term draws closer.

Andi Weimann and Danny Batth have both arrived from Blackburn, with the two carrying vast Championship experience, with the latter achieving promotion with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018. Ex-Luton Town striker Carlton Morris has also been added after being part of the Hatters side that remarkably achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

Jake Bidwell has also been linked with the club in recent days, with the path of experience seemingly vital for Eustace's upcoming plans.
