Legendary English football manager Neil Warnock has revealed why he loves watching Omar Marmoush and Jeremy Doku play after spending a day at Manchester City’s training facilities this week.
Warnock, 76, is widely renowned as one of the greatest managers in English football and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is one of Warnock’s biggest fans after the Catalan’s praise for his counterpart’s impact on English football over decades.
Manchester City have come up against Neil Warnock when the Sheffield-born manager was in charge of Cardiff City between 2016-19, with City sweeping Warnock’s former side off the park with an aggregate 7-0 score against Cardiff in the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
Warnock has lauded Guardiola for the work he’s done at the Etihad Stadium over the years and considers the 54-year-old Catalan as the greatest manager in the history of football, recently reflecting on his day with the Manchester City squad in an interview with talkSPORT.
“It was just a good day. I mean, the facilities are unbelievable. And Pep – for me, the best manager in my lifetime. And what he does with that,” said Warnock, who has revealed he had a go at Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish when he saw them this week.
“I watched a session with him (Guardiola) yesterday and you’ve got top players doing what I call the bread and butter of working their socks off. And it was interesting. It’s just good to be around,” Warnock added.
Manchester City have endured a difficult campaign as compared to the trophy-laden, all-encompassing seasons of success they have enjoyed under Guardiola since 2017, which saw them bring in the likes of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez in during the January transfer window.
Partnering Jeremy Doku in the wide attacking areas, Marmoush started for City in their crucial 1-0 win over Wolves on Friday night to take a giant step closer to securing UEFA Champions League qualification for the 2025-26 campaign.
Warnock added: “I love Omar Marmoush and Jeremy Doku. I said to Doku, I like players that are direct, get the ball and I said to him, ‘Inside, you go the other way at times just to keep the full-back thinking’.
“I just love it! Don’t worry about losing it, just go and have a go at them,” finished Warnock in his summary of an insightful day with the Manchester City squad, who have three Premier League games left and are set to take on Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final in a few weeks.
