There was late drama in Nations League in Hungary in the games of Hungary against Northern Ireland. A last-minute winner of the hosts sank all hope for the Northern Irish fans of getting a point away at Hungary. In the end it was 3-2 in favor of the hosts and the traveling side will be disappointed about this result.
Hungary: Szocs, Vida, Kovács, Németh, Németh, Zeller, Csiszár, Fenyvesi, Szabó, Pápai, Kaján.Northern Ireland: Turner, McKenna, McFadden, Vance, Caldwell, Furness, Andrews, Holloway, Wade, McGuinness, Maxwell.
It were conditions to play in as the pitch was suboptimal and the style of play of the Hungarians definitely made it difficult for Northern Ireland. This was to the advantage of the hosts and they acerted their dominance in the first half and saw that rewarded with a goal in the 18th minute: 1-0 to Hungary.
It all seemed a bit fortunate for the homeside, but it was deserved as they were the better side and now Northern Ireland had to react to this first blow they suffered. They struggled with that and couldn’t make something out of it in the first half.
In the second half, Northern Ireland grew into the game. It was only in the 81st minute, however, that they managed to convert that into a goal. Hamilton did very well and scored 1-1 for the visitors. They couldn’t celebrate that equaliser for too long as they conceded the 2-1 just a minute later in the 82nd minute of the game.
The Northern Irish pushed at the end of the game were rewarded with a penalty in the 89th minute of the game. Magill didn’t fail from the spot and scored the 2-2. But unfortunately, all that hard work wasn’t enough for the visitors. Hungary desperately wanted those three points on home soil. And they did in the 94th minute of the game they scored 3-2. A massive blow for Northern Ireland.
The teams meet again in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, October 31st, in the fourth round of Nations League games. Hungary have four points so far with Northern Ireland remaining on three.
