National team ‘contact’ Steven Gerrard as sacked Aston Villa boss eyes return to management | OneFootball

The Polish Football Association have contacted Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard over their vacant managerial role, according to reports.

Gerrard is out of work after he was sacked by Aston Villa in October last year.

The 42-year-old took on his first job in management in June 2018 when he became Rangers boss.

Six months after winning the Scottish Premiership with the Gers, Gerrard left to take on the Villa job following Dean Smith’s sacking.

The former England midfielder lasted less than a year in the job after being sacked with the Villans struggling in the Premier League this term.

Gerrard was heavily backed in the transfer market by the club’s owners but struggled to make their big-money signings perform together on the pitch.

It is unclear whether or not Gerrard is actively looking to take on a new managerial role or if he is enjoying a break after four-and-a-half grueling years with Rangers and Villa, respectively.

Many tipped him to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, but given his poor stint at Villa Park, the Reds may not be interested whatsoever in replacing the German with their former captain.

Gerrard’s next job in management may be with an international side, surprisingly.

Czeslaw Michniewicz did not pen a new contract following Poland’s last-16 exit at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The European side were pretty poor at the World Cup and made it out of their group by the skin of their teeth before being comfortably beaten by eventual finalists France.

President of the Polish FA, Cezary Kulesza, has been a busy man over the last week or so with the search for Michniewicz’s successor underway.

The report says that the original candidates were: Roberto Martinez, Herve Renard, Vladimir Petkovic, Paulo Bento, Nenad Bjelica, Marek Papszun and Jan Urban.

Originally, Gerrard was a ‘mysterious candidate’ and Meczyki are absolutely buzzing to have “finally got his name”.

The mystery man is Gerrard, whose time with Villa has ‘scratched’ his ‘coaching image’.

The 42-year-old was contacted ‘several days ago’ and is ‘considering the offer’.

It is said that the long contract he signed with Villa may hold him back from accepting the job with the Premier League due to pay him £10million in compensation between now and 2024.
