Whittaker has been subject to speculation over his future at Swansea having had two bids for him from Rangers knocked back by the Swans.

This comes after he was recalled from his productive loan spell at Plymouth Argyle where he became a key figure in their push for automatic promotion League One this season.

Whittaker is yet to make an appearance for Swansea since his return, which has led to Dyer suggesting politics are at play with the Swansea hierarchy.

Whittaker wasn’t in the squad at the weekend against QPR, saying he wasn’t in the right frame of mind which is down to the board wanting to sell the attacking according to Dyer.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Dyer said: “I don’t think everybody knows the full details of why [he didn’t play at the weekend]. I know that it wouldn’t be down to him refusing to play for Swansea, for any other reason than there must be something else in the pipeline.

“I think he’s a good player and he brings something different to the team. There’s a lot of politics involved in this. It’s not just the manager recalling him to play, it could be the owners that have something in mind.”

There will be hope that the situation can be resolved sooner rather than later. Time is ticking for Swansea to sell Whittaker and bring in a replacement for him.

The club has already had a similar scenario with Michael Obafemi and Jamie Paterson and will hope to ensure it doesn’t continue to happen by adding clarity to the transfer saga that has now unfolded.

The Verdict

It’s a strange situation for Whittaker to find himself in.

It would have been expected to see the former Derby winger feature for the Swans after his impressive loan spell with Plymouth but he hasn’t for one reason or another.

It’s hard to make any other argument other than the board wanting to sell the player. If he were to play, it would make him ineligible to feature for any other team, much like the situation with Josh Bowler and Nottingham Forest which would more than likely put off would be buyers.
