Nathaniel Phillips made headlines this week as he scored on his debut for West Bromwich Albion during their 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kyiv in Austria. But beyond the goal, a much heavier story lingers — the grief following the tragic death of his former Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota.
Phillips, 28, recently completed a £3 million move from Liverpool to West Brom, marking a new chapter in his career. Yet, his thoughts remain closely tied to his Anfield days, especially in the wake of Jota’s passing.
Just days before his West Brom debut, Phillips shared an emotional message on Instagram that laid bare his heartache.
“I’ve got to be honest I’ve been struggling with this, as I’m worried I don’t have the words,” Phillips admitted.
“How do I even begin to do justice to someone who was loved by all of us, someone who lit up countless lives and meant so much to just as many?”
He went on, “Jots, along with the rest of the world, I’m really going to miss you mate. It was a pleasure and an honour to share the dressing room with you and to be part of so many special moments and memories that we shared.”
Calling Jota “a magical footballer but most importantly a special human being,” Phillips ended his tribute by sending love and strength to Diogo and Andre’s family: “Rest in peace… Sending all my love and strength to your family.”
Although Phillips now plays in the Championship, his connection to Liverpool remains unshaken. The Bolton-born centre-back featured 29 times for the Reds, most memorably stepping up during the injury crisis of the 2020-21 season under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool, now managed by Arne Slot after winning the Premier League last season, has seen many players come and go, but Phillips’ recent words remind everyone just how close that squad became.
Scoring for West Brom so soon after such an emotional blow speaks volumes about Phillips’ mental strength. Nicknamed the “Bolton Baresi” by Liverpool supporters, he has shown resilience and determination in his early days at The Hawthorns.
While West Brom will hope to see more of his trademark aerial presence this season, Liverpool fans continue to hold Phillips close in their hearts, grateful for the way he represents the club’s spirit and brotherhood.
Phillips may now be donning West Brom colours, but his voice and presence remain part of Liverpool’s story. His tribute to Jota has resonated deeply, showing that even as players move on, the bonds forged at Anfield endure.
Liverpool supporters will no doubt be watching his journey at West Brom with pride, knowing that Phillips carries not just his talent but also the heart of a true Red wherever he goes.
