Liverpool defender Nat Phillips has offered his thoughts on Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk, saying he is eager to learn from them as they are three of the best defenders in the world.

Phillips shot to prominence last season after being asked to step into the void that had emerged in the middle of the Reds’ defence thanks to injuries to the aforementioned trio.

He did well, too, but now has to fight for his spot with them all back in contention and joined by new signing Ibrahima Konate.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Phillips is a good player and one that really shone last season but he will know how tough it is going to be to try and force his way into the side this season coming.

He’s got a lot of competition for places but all he can do is work hard and try and keep learning and then see what happens.
