Burkinabe international defender Nasser Djiga joined Rangers today from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan, and he has suffered a freak injury in just his first-ever training session with the Ibrox club.
The 22-year-old Rangers man got involved in a passing drill with his new teammates, and he had to be temporarily forced out of training following a nasty head knock.
The Light Blues medical team ended up bandaging Djiga up after the injury, and he was cleared to return to training.
Rangers have started pre-season training for the new season, and manager Russell Martin saw them play a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge in a friendly at Ibrox on Sunday.
They face Panathinaikos next in the first-leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League, and they need to kick things off with a victory as they eye participation in the elite European competition in 2025-26.
Djiga will be fit to play and could be making his official debut against the Greek club.
He is the sixth new player to join Rangers this summer, and more additions are expected as Martin looks to assemble a squad capable of stopping Celtic next season.
Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez and Thelo Aasgaard have already joined the Scottish Premiership club, and they will all be keen to hit the ground running and impress when the new campaign starts later this month.
Djiga brings much-needed experience to the Rangers defence having played for the likes of Basel in the Swiss Super League, Nimes in Ligue 2 and Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian SuperLiga before moving to the Premier League during the last winter transfer window, making six appearances.
He has what it takes to make the Light Blues better at the back after they conceded 41 league goals last term and finished 17 points behind league winners Celtic in the table, and he has immediately proven his aggressiveness in training today.
