Eintracht suffered a 2-1 defeat at Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon, Harry Kane scoring twice either side of Hugo Ekitiké’s equaliser.

There were two changes from the team that started in the 3-1 win over Augsburg last Friday. Tuta returned in defence after suspension at the expense of Philipp Max, while Ansgar Knauff replaced Farès Chaibi, who missed out due to illness.

Eagles recover from early blow

Bayern took the initiative from the off at the sold-out Allianz Arena and created the first chance after six minutes, with Thomas Müller narrowly missing the target. However, the hosts took the lead just three minutes later, when Eintracht lost possession and Konrad Laimer drove forward, before teeing up Harry Kane to tap in his 34th Bundesliga goal of the season.

The Eagles responded well and gradually found their way into the game. After Omar Marmoush had warmed Manuel Neuer’s gloves with a low shot from distance, Hugo Ekitiké equalised for the visitors from a similar range. The Frenchman collected a pass from Pacho before curling a precise strike into the bottom right corner, celebrating his new permanent contract with his second goal in as many games.

The contest opened up after that and Müller went close to instantly restoring Bayern’s lead. Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe then fired an effort wide for Frankfurt, before Kevin Trapp had to keep out a shot from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and a subsequent header from Eric Dier. Both sides then had a chance each to take the lead at the end of the first half. Knauff could only find the arms of Neuer after a promising quick counter-attack, and then Raphael Guerreiro was somehow denied by a combination of Trapp and the crossbar from close range.

Penalty decides it

Eintracht started the second half positively, with Knauff and Ekitiké both firing shots over. The game turned on the hour mark, though, when referee Daniel Schlager was alerted by the video assistant to an elbow by Robin Koch on Müller off the ball in the penalty box. After a review, the former was booked and Bayern were awarded a penalty, which Kane put beyond the reach of Trapp to make it 2-1.

The Bavarians controlled the game from that point on and had a number of chances to extend their lead, with Müller being denied on the line by Tuta and Kane going close to completing a hat-trick. Frankfurt, meanwhile, were unable to muster much of a response this time, despite the likes of Niels Nkounkou and Hugo Larsson coming on, and left empty-handed.
