Napoli travelled to Sassuolo on Friday and took another key step towards their first Serie A title in 33 years with a 2-0 win.
Scorers: Kvaratskhelia 13′, Osimhen 33′
It was another 90 minutes of dominance from the Serie A leaders as Luciano Spalletti’s men cruised to victory on his 1,000th game as a coach.
Napoli’s dynamic duo Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen continued their red-hot form, each scoring within the first half-hour.
A brilliant solo drive and finish from the Georgian turned things 1-0 before the Nigerian beat two Sassuolo defenders and scored from a tight angle.
History was made in the process, too, as Osimhen became the first club player to score in seven successive Serie A games in the three-points era (since 1994-95). Gonzalo Higuaín held the record during 2015-2016 (six).
Sassuolo did manage to pull a goal back just before the break through Armand Laurienté, but VAR intervened and ruled it offside by mere margins.
Coming out into the second half, it seemed the hosts figured out how to stifle Napoli’s lethal attack. However, they failed to truly threaten the visitors at the other end, only registering two of 11 attempts on target.
Despite another 45 minutes of action, neither side could add to the scoreline. Hirving Lozano and Giovanni Simeone had promising cameos off the bench but couldn’t find their scoring touch, with the latter having a late goal ruled out.
The one worry for Spalletti will be seeing leading scorer Osimhen finish the game with a slight knock as Champions League football against Eintracht Frankfurt looms.
However, in Serie A, this result propels Napoli towards the title. They now have an 18-point lead at the top over Inter while Sassuolo are 15th.
