Napoli go top as perseverance beats Milan

Scorers: Giroud 70′; Politano 55′ (P), Simeone 78′

Fans were treated to a top-table clash late on Sunday as two clubs in the top four went head-to-head at the San Siro.

Both Milan and Napoli were keen to take control of the match and chances flew throughout the opening 45 minutes with Napoli controlling the ball but nobody was able to break the deadlock.

Milan, who were without Rafael Leão due to suspension, had the best chance of the match when Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick was tipped onto the woodwork by goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Coming out into the second half everything was up for grabs and it was a mistake that led to the opener after VAR review.

New signing Sergiño Dest made a foul in the box which allowed Matteo Politano to step up to the spot for 1-0.

As time went on Milan threw numbers forward to try and pile on the pressure but Napoli stood strong – that was until the inevitable Giroud drilled the ball home for 1-1.

With roughly 15 minutes to go either side had chances to find a late winner and it was the visitors who made the most of their opportunity when substitute Giovanni Simeone headed the ball in the net.

Milan did miss two great efforts to find a dramatic equaliser but fell short, with Pierre Kalulu in particular, hitting the woodwork.

The result means Napoli remain unbeaten and sit top of the table while Milan (fifth) suffer their first loss.

Allegri’s problems grow as Monza stun Juventus

Scorers: Gytkjær 74′

Sent off: Di María 41′

The pressure is mounting on Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri after his side were beaten by Serie A bottom side Monza.

Raffaele Palladino’s side, in their first ever season in the Italian top flight, earned their first ever win at this level with an energetic performance against the Old Lady who were reduced to ten man.

Ángel Di María saw red in the first half after appearing to lash out at Monza defender Armando Izzo, throwing an elbow into the body of the centre-back.

It left the visitors with their backs against the wall for the second half as the newly-promoted team pushed for a breakthrough.

Dany Mota and Christian Gytkjær both spurned good chances from close range before the winning goal eventually came in the 74th minute.

Patrick Ciurria’s inviting cross landed at the feet of Gytkjær six yards out and he poked the ball past Mattia Perrin to seal a historic victory.

The result leaves Juventus eighth in the table with just two wins from their first seven games, while Monza move off the bottom and up to 18th.

Udinese blow Inter away

Scorers: Škriniar (OG) 22′, Bijol 85′, Arslan 90+3; Barella 5′

Inter fell to yet another defeat after being outplayed by Udinese at the Dacia Arena.

Nicoló Barella had given Inter the lead after just five minutes with a stunning free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out but before long the hosts were level when Roberto Pereyra’s set-piece was turned into his own net by Milan Škriniar.

After a bright start from the visitors they struggled to maintain their authority on the game and it resulted in head coach Simone Inzaghi making a double substitution in the 30th minute, with Alessandro Bastoni and Henrikh Mkhitaryan making way.

That drastic measure didn’t have the desired effect with Udinese growing in confidence and launching a heavy assault on the Inter goal.

Sandi Lovric’s low drive from the edge of the box was tipped wide by Samir Handanović before Gerard Deulofeu was denied by the post.

But the goal eventually did come five minutes from full-time with Deulofeu’s corner headed in at the near post by Jaka Bijol.

Inter pushed for an equaliser which left me open at the back and Tolgay Arslan headed in after a swift counter-attack to earn a stunning victory for Andrea Sottil’s side, who have now won five out of their first seven games while Inter drop to seventh with their third defeat of the season so far.
