Napoli manager Antonio Conte delivered his verdict on Saturday’s stomach-wrenching 2-2 draw at Lazio. His side conceded a late equalizer in a dramatic contest at the Stadio Olimpico, temporarily extending their lead on runners-up Inter to two points.
The game didn’t start well for Napoli as Gustav Isaksen fired Lazio in front with a long-range thunderbolt. However, Giacomo Raspadori drew the visitors level shortly after, sending the teams into the halftime interval on level terms.
Napoli turned the game on its head midway through the second half, courtesy of Adam Marusic’s unfortunate own goal. Yet, second-half substitute Boulaye Dia netted an 87th-minute equalizer to steal two precious points from the Partenopei.
Conte talked to DAZN via TMW after the game.
“It is disappointing because, at the end of the day, we dropped four points from the last two trips to the Stadio Olimpico at the 90th minute against two great opponents,” the Napoli coach admitted. “Our team has quality and proves that we are tough to beat, but being caught up right at the death does leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
David Neres’ injury forced Conte to play Raspadori from the start. It proved a blessing in disguise for Napoli as the diminutive forward delivered an incredible performance, drawing plaudits from his manager.
“What I always say is that we must not go against the characteristics of our players, regardless of the system, so that we can get the best out of them,” the Napoli boss added. “Raspadori can play as a support striker. “This was the plan, the lads interpreted it well and I cannot ask them for more.”
