Napoli slumped to a new low on the final day of the Serie A season.
The defending champions, who had long since ceded their title to Inter Milan this season, needed to win to keep their slim hopes of European football alive for next season.
But they could not find the cutting edge they so desperately needed despite facing a Lecce side with nothing to play for, having to settle for a goalless draw in front of a disgruntled home support.
In doing so, they wrote their names into history for all the wrong reasons. Finishing 10th in Serie A, they put up the second worst performance by any reigning champions since the Italian top flight changed from two points per game to three.
They still have Milan to thank for not being the holders of that record, with the Rossoneri finishing 11th with 43 points back in 1997. Still, it’s hardly where Napoli envisaged themselves just 12 months ago.
