Serie A table-toppers Napoli have made contact to sign VFL Wolfsburg’s Josip Brekalo, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Udinese are also interested in the player as an injury to talisman Gerard Deulofeu means they need reinforcements in attack.

Brekalo’s contract expires at the end of this campaign and Napoli are aware of his situation.

However, Napoli sporting director Christian Giuntoli wants to sign him now ahead of the competition. The Bundesliga club will also not mind making some money from selling the player.

Brekalo has struggled for game time in Germany. Wolfsburg head coach Niko Kovac prefers to line up with youngster Jakub Kaminski on the left.

A lack of playing time has been disappointing for Brekalo, who was one of the best wingers in Serie A last season.

The 24-year-old was on loan to Torino and scored seven goals. He also created nine big chances, recording seven assists.

During the 2020/21 campaign, he scored seven goals and created five big chances for Wolfsburg, recording three assists.

He is a dangerous winger with the final product to match, and he would be an asset to Napoli as they strive to win the Serie A title.

Brekalo may also struggle for game time with the Partenopei, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia a mainstay on Napoli’s left side.

However, the Croatian attacker can also play on the right and could compete with Hirving Lozano and Matteo Politano.

Napoli were previously interested in Brekalo before this transfer window but are now stepping up their efforts to sign him.

Brekalo’s preference to join Napoli will be crucial in settling on his next destination.
