Napoli join the race for in-demand Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood | OneFootball

After such a disappointing season, the upcoming summer transfer window is expected to be a pivotal one for Manchester United with new co-owners INEOS looking at a possible revamp.

However after years of overpaying for the wrong players, PSR concerns have caught up with the Red Devils and they will need to first focus on sales before they can even start to think about recruitment.

So far, Raphael Varane is confirmed to be leaving and in all likelihood, Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are expected to join him.

Big name players such as Casemiro, Marcus Rashford and even skipper Bruno Fernandes have been linked with potential exits. Players who are out on loan are also expected to be moved on and this includes Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood’s uncertain future

The Englishman has scored 10 times while providing six assists during his loan spell with Getafe and his impressive displays have alerted Europe’s bigwigs to his availability.

Getafe want to keep hold of the United academy graduate but United’s asking price could prove to be beyond them. Barcelona, who were interested at one point, already exited the race.

Spanish media claimed Atletico Madrid are in the front seat while Italian media have been proclaiming Juventus as the forward’s most likely next destination.

United are even open to reintegrating the 22-year-old should they not receive a suitable offer while refusing to entertain further loan requests.

Interestingly, Corriere Dello Sport have now claimed that former Serie A winners Napoli are looking at a possible deal for Greenwood.

Napoli want a versatile forward and the England international fits the bill due to his ability with both feet and his positional flexibility. This season, the youngster has played both on the right and the left wing as well as upfront on his own.

“Napoli’s re-foundation is underway, it will be extensive, and in this hunt for possible starters for next season the club is looking for players who know how to do more than one thing, are modern, and have the quality in their feet to inflame the public with their play. Mason Greenwood (22) is one of them.

“He is on loan and will return to United at the end of the season, who however want to sell him. Getafe would like to keep him, but they cannot afford him unless on loan. Napoli knows this well, they like him, but so does Juventus.”

Greenwood’s current deal with the club expires in 2025 with United having the option to trigger the one-year extension option in order to protect his market value.

It will be interesting to see what United ultimately do with Greenwood. Hopefully, INEOS can be ruthless and sell him for big money that is then reinvested into the squad.
