The Napoli hierarchy stated its case to Antonio Conte in a long meeting in Rome on Monday, which has at least convinced the coach to take more time before making the call after his departure seemed certain in previous days, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
Aurelio De Laurentiis promised him a rich transfer window. The affection shown by the fans during the Scudetto festivities didn’t hurt. The gaffer is still irked about what happened in January, when his requests weren’t met and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia wasn’t replaced. The gaffer said that he would like to start the season with the best squad for a change in an ensuing presser.
The Napoli governor is ready to appease Conte on that front with a few high-profile signings. Kevin De Bruyne is on the verge of joining. The president suggested that Jonathan David would be next.
The parties will meet again later in the week, but the Partenopei can’t wait too long. Their top replacement, Massimiliano Allegri, is being insistently pursued by Milan, which might take advantage of the opening. Moreover, Inter could materialize at any moment if they catch wind that Simone Inzaghi will leave.
It’d be a nice change of pace for him if he stayed, as winning again would be more difficult and a more impressive feat even with an improved roster. Fleeing would be the easy way out. Considering how things have been going at Juventus, the job will be there in the future too. Conversely, it’d be least surprising if De Laurentiis reached out to Gasperini, whose Atalanta exit appears a lot more likely than in the past.
