Despite this, there is a general feeling that the 28-year-old hasn’t fulfilled his potential. He has often shown flashes of his best stuff but has struggled for fitness and consistency.

The Guinean’s contract is set to expire this summer. With midfield options at Liverpool somewhat limited, the club are hoping to encourage him to renew.

If he opts not to extend, Keita could return to the Bundesliga. Sport Bild reports that Dortmund and former club Leipzig are eyeing up a move for the midfielder.

He may not have stood out in the Premier League, but Keita’s spell in Germany was very impressive. In two Bundesliga seasons, he scored 14 goals and registered 12 assists while earning a place in the 2016/17 Team of the Season.

Dortmund could need a new midfielder soon, depending on the future of Jude Bellingham. The teenager has become one of the most sought-after prospects in Europe and will likely move on this summer.

The Black and Yellows are enjoying a fine season. They are second in the Bundesliga, behind Bayern Munich on goal difference, and remain in the Champions League and DFB Pokal.

Die Roten Bullen aren’t too far behind in fourth place. They are also in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal and drew their Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie against Manchester City.
