Mykhailo Mudryk was out of Chelsea’s plans for a while after some disappointing showings, but he picked up an assist on Saturday after his first impressive showing in a while, and that should mean he plays tonight, given the Blues need to score. It’s not like Frank Lampard has many alternatives to pick from.
Here’s the problem however – Madrid know exactly what is coming.
The advantages of being two goals up are not just that you’ve got a lead in the tie, it also means that you know your opposition’s plan. Chelsea have to attack from the start, and Madrid can plan accordingly. Mudryk’s pace and dribbling can hurt anyone, but Carlo Ancelotti can set his team up nice and deep, with plenty of extra cover down the Ukrainian’s side to nullify him. You won’t find a better defensive option than Fede Valverde to do a doubling up job.
So for all the potential of a breakout showing, everything is lined up for Madrid to shut Mudryk down.
