Preston North End bolstered their midfield with the signing of Josh Onomah at the back end of the January transfer window, shortly after the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder left Fulham by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old won promotion from the Championship twice with the Cottagers, and will be expecting to establish himself as a regular starter under Ryan Lowe.

North End have fallen away from the top six conversation in the last couple of months with Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion bulldozing their way into the play-off chasing pack, but having said that, Lowe’s men are just three points behind sixth place ahead of hosting Bristol City on Saturday.

FLW’s PNE fan pundit Sam Weeden offered his mixed reaction to Onomah’s arrival.

Speaking to Football League World, Weeden said“I think from the perspective of the player, the club have probably got it spot on.

“It’s a position we needed to strengthen, the narrative seems to be at North End that we’re a bit stacked in midfield.

“But, when you break it down, Daniel Johnson is going to be out of contract and Ben Woodburn is a bit hit and miss, I’m not sure he’s at Championship level.

“So, I think it was definitely an area that we needed to strengthen in.

“I think Josh Onomah did well in Fulham’s promotion seasons, despite the injury record he’s a talented player and on a free transfer it’s worth the risk.

“My only issue was the contract length, getting him on a six-month deal, as good as it is to not be stuck paying players for too long like we have been in the past with the likes of Josh Harrop and Josh Earl who had contracts that we cancelled, also Sean Maguire, I think we risk him (Onomah) doing really well and going to another club, so I’d have preferred it to be – six months with an option or an 18-month deal.

“Hopefully he hits the ground running because it is a position I thought we needed strengthening in, and fingers crossed he does well.”
