Rayan Cherki (20) enters the final year of his contract at Olympique Lyonnais this summer with question marks surrounding his future at his formative club.

Since breaking onto the professional stage at age 16, there have never been doubts about the talent possessed by the creative midfielder, his consistency on the other hand can leave a lot to be desired.

It’s been a problem that has prevented the player from inhabiting his usual role as a starter for the team, with his minutes reduced under both Fabio Grosso and Pierre Sage’s management of the club this season.

There have been moments of promise for Cherki in a Lyon shirt this season, with most of them predominantly coming in the side’s Coupe de France run that will see them play out a final against Paris Saint-Germain on the 25th of May.

Rayan Cherki – ‘You’re never better than when you’re against the wall’

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the club’s fixture against FC Nantes this Sunday evening, Cherki touched on the lack of minutes this season. “Of course it motivates me, I want to play every minute. I accept the coach’s choices, I know that this period is not an end in itself, there are a lot of matches left and I have a lot of things to bring to the team.”

The attacking midfielder accepts the criticism that he’s faced this season, “You are never better than when you are against the wall, but you have to try and not wait until you’re against the wall before giving your best. With Sage, we build on my shortcomings to progress and eventually, it’ll pay off.”

Cherki finished by addressing the elephant in the room, his future at the club. “I don’t think about what’s next at all. My future will wait, until the end of the season. Lyon comes first. When the time comes to ask the question, we will ask it, but it is not yet the time.”
