Lamine Yamal is clearly the new star of this FC Barcelona team, as he has not only made a permanent place for himself in the first team at only 17 years of age but is also regularly the difference maker for his team on the pitch.

This was evident only in the last match of the Blaugrana team, as he assisted Dani Olmo for his side’s opening goal, which would have been enough to give his side a win.

With the level that he has shown at such a young age, there has been an ongoing debate on how he compares with some of the biggest legends in the history of the Catalan club, and whether he would have been able to make a place in some of the historic Barcelona teams.

As MARCA has reported, the former Blaugrana defender Gerard Pique seems to be quite clear that Yamal would not have been playing in the first team during his generation, which was one of the most successful in the Catalan club’s history.

The Spaniard was talking to a new podcast started by the former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Its first episode is yet to be fully aired, but these comments were revealed in a trailer.

In this trailer, the former Barcelona defender can be heard saying:

“My feeling is that Lamine Yamal wouldn’t be playing in our generation.”

Similarly, the trailer also shows the two former players talking about the tension that was experienced when their respective teams faced each other in El Clasicos.

But Pique’s comments on Yamal will certainly be the ones that generate the most interest. Despite the quality shown by Yamal, it seems difficult to argue against the former defender, as during his time, there were the likes of Lionel Messi, David Villa, and Samuel Eto’o leading the Blaugrana line.
