As reported by multiple sources, including HLN, Nicolas Raskin has refused to sign a new contract with Standard Liege and like Selim Amallah he will no longer feature for the first team. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2023, the club are hoping that they can sell the talented midfielder in January to avoid him leaving for nothing at the end of the season.
Raskin had been rumoured to leave over the summer, with teams like Club Brugge, Reims, Bologna and Rangers being interested. However, a move did not materialise and Raskin remained with Standard. The club had been hopeful that an improvement on the pitch would convince the 20 year-old to stay in Liege, yet no contract agreement has been reached.
Head coach Ronny Deila was speaking about the situation, and like with Amallah he is disappointed with how the situation has unfolded. The Norwegian said “It’s a shame, because he’s a fantastic boy and an important player for us. It is a political decision and as a club you also have to create value on your players”.
Despite new investment in the summer, Standard are still struggling financially. Recently it was revealed that captain Noe Dussenne is likely to leave at the end of the season due to the club not being in a position to offer him a new deal. At the age of 30, it is likely that the club wanted to prioritise the likes of Raskin, who could command a substantial fee in the future. It has not been revealed yet what sort of fee the club are looking to receive for Raskin, which will likely be cut price due to the contract situation.
