David Moyes has confirmed Jesper Lindstrøm will miss "most of the season" for Everton.
Lindstrøm remained a notable absentee for Moyes' side in their previous two games against Liverpool and Arsenal as he attempted to overcome a groin complaint.
But the Blues' manager revealed on Friday that the Denmark international has now undergone a hernia operation which will sideline him for most of the campaign.
"Unfortunately Jesper had a hernia operation yesterday so that will rule him out for probably for most of the season now," said Moyes.
"That's disappointing for him and for us because he'd started to show some decent form in the last month or so, and he was an important player for us."
Moyes also confirmed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still three weeks away from being back in contention after being sidelined since January with a hamstring injury.
"Dom's out on the grass and he's training well," he added.
"I think because it's been a hamstring injury it's not the sort of thing we can speed up greatly and bring him back [sooner].
"We're trying to follow all the protocols with it and trying not to bring him back to quickly.
"But we're roughly thinking we've got another three weeks on Dom before talking about him getting back into the side."
Everton travel to a high-flying Nottingham Forest in Saturday's Premier League action.
