Movistar pundit Mono Burgos has on Thursday been relieved of his duties with the media outlet.

This comes amid the ongoing fallout from the comments laid out by Burgos in the buildup to the Champions League meeting between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain last night.

The Movistar representative, for his part, turned heads across Spain for all the wrong reasons, owing to comments directed at Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.

Whilst observing footage of the 16-year-old showcasing his talents during the warm-up for Wednesday’s Parc des Princes clash, Burgos warned his colleagues to:

“Be careful because if he doesn’t do well, he will end up in front of traffic lights.”

Whilst the commentator himself appeared to see the funny side of his jibe, the same, understandably, could not be said for the powers that be at either Barcelona, or PSG.

In fact, post-match, the two clubs stood united in their refusal to provide Movistar with interviews.

And, as alluded to above, the fallout has not ended there.

As confirmed in an official statement released by Movistar (cited by Cadena SER) on Thursday, Burgos has been fired with immediate effect:

“Movistar Plus+ and Germán ‘El Mono’ Burgos will immediately stop collaborating on the platform’s programs and the presenters will be notified of the space where these comments occurred.”

This comes “in compliance with Movistar Plus+’s internal code of conduct, which contemplates a policy of zero tolerance for any discriminatory behavior.”
