Jose Mourinho has wished Manchester United the best under Erik ten Hag after being proved ‘right’ about the club’s issues.

United will embark on a new era under Ten Hag next season as the club look to address a decade of decline, with the former Ajax boss the latest high-profile coach to take charge at Old Trafford.

Mourinho spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Red Devils from 2016 to 2018, winning a League Cup and Europa League double during his debut season.

Those trophies remain the club’s last major honours and Mourinho infamously claimed a runners-up finish in 2017/18 was among his greatest managerial achievements, hinting at the difficulties behind the scenes.

United have since struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, with the 2021/22 campaign seeing the side earn a record low Premier League points total.

Mourinho spoke on his hope for the club to bounce back under Ten Hag next season, but said he has been proven right with the continued issues in the background at United.

“Of course my English connection is Chelsea, that’s the way I’m seen, as a Chelsea man. Two periods at Chelsea, six years,” he told BT Sport. “But Man United, the fans are special. There is lots of good people inside the club, it’s not like I’m happy to be right.

“I’m not happy to be right, I’ll like to be wrong. But I knew that I was right. The first thing you have to change when things are not going right is the mentality and the organisation. And it was not coming.

“I knew that for me to leave was not going to resolve the situation. I knew that, unfortunately. I wish them the best, honestly, I wish them the best and hopefully they make it.”
