Jose Mourinho is set to ‘prioritise’ strengthening Tottenham’s defence this summer, that being if he can manage to hang on to his job for that long of course.

After a strong start to the season which saw some label Spurs as potential title challengers, it has been yet another disappointing campaign for the North London side.

Mourinho’s side are currently on course to miss out on Champions League football for a second successive season, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, three points adrift of an in-form Chelsea side.

Spurs FA Cup hopes were ended in the fifth round in an entertaining 5-4 loss to Everton, while their Europa League campaign came to a crushing and embarrassing end at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb last week, Mourinho’s men surrendering a 2-0 first-leg lead with a shock 3-0 loss in Croatia.

They do of course have the possibility of ending their 13 year wait for a trophy, though have the hugely difficult task of beating Pep Guardiola’s quadruple chasing Manchester City in next month’s Wembley final.

With Harry Kane and Heung Min Son – and more recently, Gareth Bale – leading the line, Jose Mourinho has one of the Premier League’s more exciting front threes at his disposal, though fans have grown frustrated at the Portuguese’s perceived negative tactics.

Those tactics have perhaps been underpinned by a lack of confidence in his defence, the FA Cup exit to Everton showing their lack of defensive solidity when they do play with more attacking freedom.

According to the Telegraph, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is set to ‘prioritise strengthening the centre of the Spurs defence’ this summer, with Lille’s Sven Botman and Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard both having been ‘watched’ in recent months.

The report also suggests that Mourinho is willing to allow Serge Aurier to leave the club, with Norwich right-back, Max Aarons, a player of interest.

All of this is of course dependent on Mourinho still being a Tottenham employee by the end of the season, the report saying that success in the Carabao Cup final may not even be enough to save him from the sack amid growing discontent among the Spurs faithful.

Daniel Levy is believed to be keen on RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, the Spurs chairman concerned about welcoming back the club’s supporters amidst a wave of discontent.
