Mourinho reveals why Bale was absent from Tottenham starting XI against West Ham

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has opened up on why he did not pick Gareth Bale to start the game against West Ham United.

The Welshman started on the substitute bench in what turned out to be a dramatic London derby. He eventually made his much-awaited return with Spurs leading 3-0.

Bale showed good movement and even went close only to striker the outside of the goalpost. Unfortunately, the night ended on a sour note as the Hammers scored three late goals to escape with a point.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho stands by his decision to not give the 31-year-old the first start in his second spell at the club.

Mourinho’s comments appeared to indicate that Bale is far from an automatic spot in the team. If that is the case, it augurs well in regard to competition for the starting spot.

Bale’s attitude at Tottenham is in stark contrast to the one he showcased in the Spanish capital. He looks to be enjoying his football.

Mourinho also went on to deflect blame from any accusation that held the Welshman responsible for the dropped points. The 31-year-old showed flashes of his undoubted quality and will hopefully hit top form soon.

Bale had a late chance to win the game for Spurs. It, however, ended on an anticlimactic note as his marauding run ended with him striking wide.

He will have plenty of opportunities to impress and is sure to hit the target sooner than later.
