Jose Mourinho has insisted that he doesn’t need to buy any players in the upcoming January window because he already loves the ones he has inherited.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has been catapulted back into the spotlight since his appointment as Spurs head coach on Wednesday morning, the Portuguese’s name dominating the column inches of most publications around the world, including here at The Football Faithful.

Since that announcement, questions have been raised as to what kind of funds Daniel Levy will make available to Mourinho, the 56-year-old having spent over £1 billion over the course of his career.

However, following some suggestions that there is very little in Spurs‘ transfer kitty, Mourinho admitted he opted for a move to North London due to the quality of the players already in the squad, the self-appointed ‘Special One’ having been linked to the likes of Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, and Danny Rose during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

“I told the players that one of the reasons I decided to come was them,” Jose told his debut press conference as Tottenham boss. “I tried to buy some of them for different clubs and couldn’t, some of them I didn’t even try because it was impossible. I am not just saying that now, I have said for years.

“I want to respect the base of work that they have done for five years, it is an update not a change. I am here to try and understand why the results in the last year in the Premier League were not good. I am not here to make dramatic changes and create confusion in their brains.

“I am going to be very careful.”

Mourinho kicks off his career as Spurs manager with a London derby against West Ham on Saturday, and when he was asked by a Portuguese journalist about his transfer targets – Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes named in particular – Jose reiterated his happiness at his squad, though insisted he needs time to get to know his players.

“I don’t need players. I am happy with the ones I have. I just need more time with them. I know them well from playing against them, but you never know them well enough.”
