There were a few contenders for this award for Walid Regragui’s men.

Romain Saïss was a colossus at the back and his presence at set-pieces proved led to the opening goal and could have caused another, while two of the manager’s substitutes got themselves on the score sheet.

But it has to go to their star attacker in Ziyech who was at the centre of everything good about his side’s forward forays.

He was denied a goal in the first half when another of his dangerous deliveries crept past Thibaut Courtois, only for a marginal offside call to deny him his moment after a VAR check.

Particularly after Achraf Hakimi exited, the pressure on his shoulders increased to deliver and he stepped up in a big way in leading his country to what is only their third ever World Cup win.

His assist for Morocco’s second was superb as he showed great skill, desire and energy deep into a gruelling contest to cut the ball back for the goal which secured the points.

That was the forward at his flying, confident best.

And it may help secure him the January move his career desperately needs. He is much too talented to warm any bench.
