Phil Foden (England)

England head coach Gareth Southgate had to field question after question at the start of the tournament over why he wasn’t selecting Phil Foden in his starting line-up.

There should be no more questions about the Manchester City’s starting place after his performance tonight.

Jude Bellingham impressed once again but it was Foden that provided two pivotal passes to take this game away from Senegal.

The 22-year-old started on the left of an attacking trio supporting Harry Kane, which many argue is his best position when donning the Man City shirt, and he certainly stoked up the fire behind that theory tonight.

His presence of mind to play a pass first time into Harry Kane on the counter-attack for the England captain to slot home the second goal was impressive but it was the build-up to Bukayo Saka’s strike that displayed what Foden is capable of.

The ability to take the ball, dribble and shrug off one Senegal defender before then spinning a delightful driven cross on to the toes of the Arsenal winger was sublime and showed England fans an example of some of the technical quality they have perhaps lacked at previous World Cups.

England’s embarrassment of riches in the attacking department means that two of Foden, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling will have to start on the bench on Saturday against France.

Not a bad dilemma for Southgate to have.

Foden couldn’t have done much more to stake his claim for a place tonight.
