There are games and more often, specific players, that become the reference point for discussions about World Cups with friends, family, partners, colleagues etc.

The 2014 tournament is more renowned for Brazil 1-7 Germany than it is for the final itself. Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ in 1986 is talked about more than Argentina winning the trophy itself.

The 2022 World Cup has just found its game in Cameroon 3-3 Serbia and its player in Vincent Aboubakar.

And the latter only came into the contest in the 55th minute.

Cameroon looked dead and buried two minutes earlier when Aleksandar Mitrović made it 3-1 to Serbia.

Their defence was all over the place, Serbia were tearing them apart at will and it looked likely that they would go on to make it 5 or 6.

But on came the 30-year-old striker from the bench and suddenly the complexion of the game changed and a new addition to the ‘Memorable World Cup Moments’ YouTube compilation was created.

Serbia left mountains of space behind the defensive line to be exploited and the Al Nassr man did so with pleasure.

He ran on to Jean Charles-Castelletto’s through ball before producing a finish as nonchalant as you’ve ever seen, turning a defender inside out before lifting the ball over Vanja Milinković-Savić and into the top corner.

It was almost as if Aboubakar expected to be ruled offside so decided to playfully scoop the ball into the net but instead VAR deemed he was onside, and one of the most audacious goals in World Cup history was created.

Two minutes later he was through behind the Serbia backline again, and this time he played creator, laying the ball on a plate for Eric Choupo-Moting to complete the stunning comeback.

Cameroon only have one point from their first two games and face Brazil next. Whether this result will lead to them making the knockout rounds remains to be seen but football is about memories and moments and Aboubakar played his role in creating a big one today.
